How do children learn to transfer knowledge to new problems?

Transfer becomes more likely when children understand relationships, compare examples, retrieve knowledge in varied forms and practise deciding when an idea applies.

Toku aims to move children beyond “I can do the question I practised” toward “I can recognise when this knowledge is useful somewhere else.”

Comparison can reveal shared structure

Connecting multiple examples can help children attend to relational structure instead of memorising surface details.[1]

Mixed practice adds a decision

Interleaved problems require learners to identify which method applies rather than simply repeat the method used in the previous item.[2]

Reasoning gives transfer somewhere to start

Analogical reasoning provides a way to map something already understood onto a new situation.[3]
