Retrieval practice is broader than flashcards. In maths, it can mean recalling a number fact, selecting a method, reconstructing a procedure or explaining a relationship without the answer being visible.
Why retrieval helps
Retrieval is an active memory event. Experimental and meta-analytic evidence shows that practice tests can improve later retention compared with additional study.[1][2]
What this looks like in maths
For a fluent calculation, the child retrieves a fact or efficient procedure. In mixed practice, retrieval also includes deciding which strategy applies.[4]
How retrieval fits with teaching
Retrieval works best once a concept has been taught clearly, with explanation, representation and opportunities to reason giving the child something meaningful to retrieve.
