Toku parent question

Why does Toku care about test scores and lifelong understanding?

Because they are not opposites. Strong understanding should become usable knowledge, and usable knowledge should help children perform when an assessment asks them to reason, retrieve and solve.

Toku uses scores as one visible measure of performance while keeping the larger goal on what the child can understand, retain, transfer and do with that knowledge.

Scores can guide the next action

Formative assessment is valuable when evidence from performance changes what happens next rather than simply labelling the learner.[1]

Thinking skills can be assessed too

Critical-thinking interventions and creative-reasoning studies show that learning outcomes can include how children evaluate and construct reasoning, not only whether they remember a fact.[2][3]

Durable knowledge still matters

Retrieval research shows why making knowledge easier to access later is part of long-term understanding and performance.[4]
