Why does divergent thinking matter for children?

Because difficult problems often have more than one plausible way in. Divergent thinking helps children generate alternatives before deciding which route is strongest.

Toku treats idea generation as part of problem solving. A child who can produce several possible moves has more to work with when the obvious route fails.

Generating possibilities can be practised

Experimental work shows that children and adolescents can change how broadly they generate possibilities after divergent-thinking experiences or training.[1][2]

In mathematics, creativity can mean building a route

Creative mathematical reasoning research studies situations where learners have to construct or justify a solution method instead of simply copying one.[3]
