What is interleaving in maths?

Interleaving means mixing different but related problem types so the learner has to recognise which method to use rather than being told by the order of the worksheet.

It is most useful after the underlying problem types have been taught well enough for the learner to attempt them.

Blocked practice gives away the method

If every question on a page is the same type, the child can often repeat the previous procedure without deciding what the new problem requires.[1]

Mixed practice adds discrimination

Classroom research has found that interleaving can improve delayed mathematics performance by requiring learners to distinguish among problem types.[2]

How good mixed practice is built

Good interleaving mixes skills that are ready to be compared, so children practise recognising which method fits instead of simply following a repeated pattern.[1]
