Procedural flexibility

Choosing between methods and switching to a more efficient or more appropriate strategy when the problem allows it.

Why should children know more than one way to solve a problem?

Because a method that is excellent for one problem can be clumsy for another. Flexible solvers recognise structure and choose rather than mechanically repeat.[1]

كيف يستخدم Toku هذا المبدأ

Toku can vary problems so that the easiest route changes, invite comparison between methods and reward correct reasoning rather than one mandated procedure.

ما الذي تظهره الأبحاث

1

Research on mental set shows that repeated use of one procedure can make learners less likely to notice a more efficient strategy later.[1]

2

Creative mathematical reasoning has been studied as an alternative to purely imitative procedure-following.[2]

3

Mixed practice can force learners to discriminate between problem types instead of relying on the order of a worksheet as a cue.[3]

لماذا قد يفيد هذا طفلك

Your child builds a habit of asking “what is the best way into this?” instead of “which memorised steps do I copy?”

للأهل

Fluency gives children tools. Flexibility helps them choose the right tool.
