Toku parent question

Why mix maths question types?

Because exams and real problem solving rarely announce which procedure should be used. Mixed practice can train the decision about what kind of problem this is.

There is a difference between knowing how to execute a method and knowing when that method applies.

Choice is part of the skill

Interleaved mathematics practice can improve the learner’s ability to discriminate between different problem types and select an appropriate strategy.[1]

Conceptual connections still matter

Mixed practice should sit alongside explicit work on mathematical representations, connections and problem-solving strategies.[2]

How Toku can use mixed review

A skill can begin with focused practice and later reappear alongside other families once the child is ready to identify it without an obvious cue.
