What is cognitive load in maths?

Cognitive load is the mental demand placed on limited working-memory resources while a child is processing a problem.

A maths problem can be difficult because the mathematical idea is difficult, but it can also be difficult because too many basic steps still require conscious effort at the same time.

Working memory is limited

Cognitive load theory focuses on the fact that new information and problem-solving steps have to be processed within limited working-memory capacity.[1]

Maths can stack demands quickly

Once a problem involves more than simple fact retrieval, working memory becomes important for holding and manipulating intermediate information.[2]

Why foundations help

Knowledge that can be retrieved efficiently does not need to be reconstructed from scratch each time, which can reduce one source of avoidable mental demand.[1]
