What is the science behind Toku?
Toku combines ideas from learning science and cognitive science: retrieval, spacing, feedback, transfer, flexible reasoning, metacognition, executive control and appropriately difficult practice. The purpose is to help children build knowledge they can use, not only answers they can repeat.
Does Toku only develop maths skills?
No. Maths is one important practice area, but Toku is built around broader abilities such as memory, logic, pattern recognition, critical thinking, divergent thinking, spatial reasoning, focus, planning and flexible problem solving.
Why does Toku care about divergent thinking?
Some problems have more than one useful route. Divergent thinking is the ability to generate possibilities before evaluating them. Toku uses varied problems and reasoning challenges to encourage children to look beyond the first familiar method.
How does Toku support critical thinking?
Children need to do more than produce an answer. They need to compare possibilities, notice evidence, test assumptions and decide whether a route makes sense. Toku builds practice around those decisions as difficulty rises.
Why use short sprints?
A short sprint creates a focused attempt that can be repeated, compared and varied. That makes it easier to practise retrieval, notice progress, expose weak strategies and return to a skill without turning every practice session into a long test.
Why does Toku still care about scores and speed?
Performance matters when it measures a capability worth building. Toku uses scores and timing as feedback on accuracy, fluency and control, while the larger goal remains understanding, reasoning and the ability to handle unfamiliar problems.
How can these skills help with Olympiads, hackathons or entrance tests?
These settings differ, but they often reward a common set of abilities: secure knowledge, pattern recognition, flexible strategy use, persistence, reasoning and adapting when the obvious route does not work. Toku is designed to exercise those underlying capabilities over time.
Why does Toku show personal progress?
Visible progress gives a child evidence that practice is changing what they can do. Personal bests and results can help set the next target, while the real value comes from the thinking, retrieval, correction and adaptation that produced the improvement.
